Using Insurance for Therapy
If you plan to use insurance, your cost for therapy will depend on your individual plan. Depending on your benefits, you may be responsible for a copay, coinsurance, deductible, or other cost-sharing amount.
Some helpful questions to ask your insurance company include:
- Do I have outpatient mental health benefits?
- Is my therapist considered in-network?
- What is my copay or coinsurance for telehealth outpatient psychotherapy?
- Do I have a deductible, and has it been met?
- Is telehealth psychotherapy covered under my plan?
- Are there any limitations on the number of therapy sessions covered?
Your insurance company can provide the most accurate information about your specific benefits.
Self-Pay
You do not need to use insurance to receive therapy.
Self-pay can be an option for clients who do not have coverage through one of our participating insurance plans or who prefer not to use their insurance benefits.
Individual Therapy: $120 per session

What If I’m Not Sure Whether My Insurance Is Accepted?
That’s okay.
Insurance networks and individual plans can be confusing, and having an insurance company listed above does not always mean that every plan offered by that company will provide the same coverage.
If you’re unsure, reach out to us. We can help you identify the information you’ll need to determine whether your plan can be used for services.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
Finding the right therapist is about more than insurance or cost. It’s also about finding someone with whom you feel comfortable, understood, and able to make meaningful progress.
If you’re considering therapy, we invite you to reach out and learn more about our clinicians, approach, availability, and insurance options.
You don’t have to know exactly where to begin. Sometimes the first step is simply starting the conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know what therapy will cost with my insurance?
Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your individual insurance plan. Some plans require a copay for each appointment, while others use coinsurance or require you to meet a deductible before the plan begins paying for services.
The best way to confirm your cost is to verify your outpatient behavioral health benefits directly with your insurance company. We can also help you identify the information you’ll need when checking your coverage.
What is a deductible?
A deductible is an amount you may be required to pay toward covered healthcare services before your insurance plan begins contributing according to the terms of your policy.
For example, being “in-network” does not necessarily mean that your therapy sessions will only require a copay. If your plan has a deductible that has not yet been met, you may be responsible for a larger portion of the contracted cost of your sessions until that deductible is satisfied.
Because every plan is different, your insurance company can explain how your deductible applies to outpatient mental health services.
Will my insurance cover telehealth therapy?
Many insurance plans provide coverage for telehealth behavioral health services, but coverage varies by plan.
We recommend confirming that your plan includes outpatient mental health services delivered through telehealth and that your selected clinician participates with your specific plan.
Does insurance cover couples counseling?
Sometimes, but not always.
Insurance coverage for couples counseling can be more complicated than coverage for individual psychotherapy. Many health insurance plans require treatment to be medically necessary and connected to the diagnosis and treatment of an individual covered member.
Coverage therefore depends on the circumstances, the service being provided, and your particular insurance plan.
If you’re interested in couples counseling, contact us and we can discuss available options and fees before scheduling.
Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for therapy?
Mental health treatment may qualify as an eligible medical expense for Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) funds.
Eligibility can depend on your particular account and circumstances, so we recommend confirming eligible expenses with your HSA/FSA administrator or tax professional if you’re uncertain.
Can I choose not to use my insurance?
Yes. Clients may choose to self-pay rather than submit services to insurance.
Some people prefer self-pay for personal reasons or because their insurance plan does not include their chosen therapist. If you’re considering self-pay, we’ll explain the applicable fee before treatment begins.
What if my insurance isn’t listed?
You may still have options.
Depending on your plan, you may have out-of-network benefits that reimburse you for a portion of therapy costs. Contact your insurance company and ask whether your plan includes out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits and what documentation is required for reimbursement.
You may also choose to receive services on a self-pay basis.
Will you verify my benefits for me?
We can help you navigate the insurance process and determine what information is needed to understand your coverage. However, information obtained about insurance benefits is not a guarantee of payment.
Your insurance company ultimately determines eligibility, coverage, medical necessity, and how a claim is processed.
What if my insurance changes while I’m in therapy?
Please let us know as soon as possible if your insurance company, plan, member information, or coverage changes.
Even when you remain with the same insurance company, a new plan may have different benefits, deductibles, networks, or cost-sharing requirements. Updating this information promptly can help prevent unexpected billing issues.
Still Have Questions?
Insurance shouldn’t have to be the most confusing part of beginning therapy.
If you’re unsure about your coverage, fees, or next steps, reach out to Asteria Counseling and Wellness. We’re happy to help you understand your options before you begin.
Insurance participation and benefits are subject to change. Coverage and payment are determined by your individual insurance plan and are not guaranteed by Asteria Counseling and Wellness. Clients are responsible for applicable copays, coinsurance, deductibles, non-covered services, and other amounts assigned to them by their insurance plan.
